Protruding belly or sagging tummy can happen after pregnancy. Cosmetic surgery for this problem is called Tummy tuck surgery (Abdominoplasty). Excess fat reduction, tightening of loose tummy muscles and removal of loose skin are all combined in a single procedure called tummy tuck.

Many women complain of persisting protruding belly or very loose skin on the tummy after pregnancies. This is more severe after multiple pregnancies. Loose skin and muscle weakness (diastases) does not improve with weight loss. Excess fat is removed by liposuction. The loose muscles/ diastases is mostly repaired by suturing the tissue that covers the muscles (rectus sheath). The excess skin in lower tummy is removed and pulled down from the navel level. The navel is then recreated.

If you have not had pregnancy and childbirth, usually tummy tuck is not needed- liposuction alone is sufficient to remove excess fat. Obese person with high body mass index (BMI above 35) is prone for certain complications after tummy tuck. Peron with multiple uncontrolled medical problems should not undergo cosmetic surgery.
There is constant endeavor to improve the process and outcome. 360 degree liposuction, high definition liposuction and advanced pain care are recent advances in tummy tuck surgery. Using the fat harvested to augment buttock contour (BBL) is another recent trend. Most cases do not require drain tubes now.
A full tummy tuck surgery usually needs 1-2 days hospital stay. 2 weeks of recovering at home is needed, when you can move around but avoid strenuous work. For complete healing of muscles repair, avoid lifting of heavy weights and abdominal exercises for 6 months.
